Collecting Flowers

April 8, 2004

March flew by and April has shown the same tendency. Erin will have the total round of scans again in about a month (May 4-7), so tension will mount bit by bit as that time approaches. I remain confident that Erin will have clear scans and good test results.

The Buengers have celebrated spring as it has burst forth in the Brazos Valley. Erin is making a wildflower notebook for school and has been tenacious in finding, picking, preserving, and identifying wildflowers. She has specialized in finding the tiniest ones. You know the ones. They hide deep in the tall spring grass. They don't usually have any unique foliage and sometimes no leaves at all. She presses them flat and dries them until there is barely anything left of them, BUT she wants to know exactly what they are, according the the wildflower handbook.

Erin continues to act as honorary chair and spokeschild for the Relay for Life in the Brazos Valley. She has appeared at a sorority house, a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce, and in front to the Brazos County Commissioners' Court on Relay business in the last couple of weeks. I can tell she is nervous, but determined to do a good job at each stop. Before every appearance, she carefully plans her outfit, designs her hair (yes, she has enough to design, sort of), and asks what it will be like. Once she arrives and stands in front of the audience, she alternates between showing really wide eyes with a somewhat grim expression (as she takes in the crowds) and a really bright smile (as she tries to make a good appearance). I've been very proud of her, and I think her being there does some good, by catching people's attention and making them hopeful for a positive outcome from cancer.

Healthwise, Erin has felt well on the larger front, but has suffered occasionally from season allergies and perhaps even random, unnamed viruses. She has come home from school a couple of times, including yesterday, complaining of feeling punk, but has bounced back quickly and returned to school the following day each time. It is always worrisome when a cancer child gets sick, and I never hope for Davis or Walter to get sick, too. BUT when other people in the family have the same symptoms, I feel like I can relax a bit and treat Erin's maladies as normal childhood illnesses rather than creeping cancer symptoms.

While I may not know what caused her to feel badly yesterday, I am confident that I know what prompted her miraculous recovery this morning. TICKETS TO DISNEY ON ICE for TONIGHT. Erin's cute church and school friend Abby invited her for this special occasion, and SHE IS EXCITED!

Thanks for stopping in.
